"La galette des rois"

The “galette des Rois” is a cake celebrating the Epiphany.

The “galette des Rois” is made of flaky pastry filled with frangipane.

A charm is hidden in the cake and the person who gets it becomes the king or the queen of the day and has the right to wear a crown.

The youngest of the family, hidden under the table, says who gets the pieces. “This one is for mummy!”, “This one is for daddy!”

The fava bean, which was used as a charm, was replaced in 1870 by tiny figurines made of china or - more recently – of plastic. Some people collect these charms and they have a special name in French: “les favophiles”
